COVID

There were lots of lessons to be learned from the Great Depression of 1929. A quote from Calvin Coolidge, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”, sums up the prevailing culture of several generations into what is often referred to as "the Depression mentality".

Fast-forward 90 years to today’s global pandemic. We are all affected by what is going on around us, so there is likely to be a "COVID mentality" emerge from these shared experiences.

It got us wondering what would the hallmarks of the "COVID mentality" look like.

As Senior + Specialty Move Managers, we are witnessing a trend towards placing less emphasis on material things. Each day, we are reminded that the important things in life… aren’t things!

Perhaps it’s because in-person shopping has been severely curtailed that many of us are focused on making essential purchases, not frivolous ones.

Spending more time in our homes, we find ourselves in the middle of a muddle with too much stuff. We seem to be embracing downsizing and simplifying our homes in an attempt to be in control…of something...even if it is just our stuff!

We are looking forward to getting back to visiting with friends and family, dinners at restaurants and on patios and talking and laughing with each other, in-person. We want to spend more time outdoors where we can social-distance AND still interact with real people.

Is it our imagination or are people actually smiling more behind those masks? As we hold doors open for each other, chat more in elevators and in line-ups and celebrate the little things, there appears to be a kinder, gentler world emerging.

You must have rain before you get a rainbow, so maybe, just maybe, this experience we're going through will have a positive effect on all of our lives.

That’s our hope, anyway!
